The “Police Well-Being Programme,” a collaborative effort between the Tamil Nadu Police and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, is setting a new standard in addressing the physical and mental stress faced by law enforcement officers. This program saw 246 master trainers, including 115 police officers and 131 private counselors, undergo an intensive five-day training session conducted by NIMHANS. These master trainers are now equipped to cascade the training to thousands more within the force, creating a ripple effect that ensures mental health support is embedded at all levels of the police hierarchy.

The commitment to ongoing education is further evidenced by the decision of 46 police officers to complete a Diploma Course in Psychological Well-Being from NIMHANS. This additional qualification not only enhances their ability to manage stress but also empowers them to support their colleagues in more meaningful ways. The recent inauguration of the third batch of 69 police officers for a six-month online diploma course underscores the department’s long-term commitment to this cause.

The inauguration of the latest batch of trainees was presided over by Shankar Jiwal, IPS, Director General of Police and Head of the Tamil Nadu Police Force. His leadership, along with the support of other senior officials like Vinith Dev Wankhede, IPS, and Dr. M. Durai, IPS, demonstrates the top-down commitment to the well-being of police personnel.
