In recent times, there have been various claims suggesting a decline in law and order in Tamil Nadu, particularly focusing on an alleged increase in murder cases. As the Head of the Police Force in Tamil Nadu, I find it imperative to address these concerns with facts and data that highlight the true state of law and order in the state.
Murder Cases: The Reality Behind the Numbers
The allegations of a rise in murder cases in Tamil Nadu are not supported by the data. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the number of murders in our state has steadily decreased over the past decade. In 2011, Tamil Nadu recorded 1,741 murder cases. By 2022, this number had dropped to 1,597—a significant decrease despite the state’s population growth.
Furthermore, the data for 2024 up to July shows 913 cases. If this trend continues, the total number of murders this year will likely remain well below the figures from a decade ago. This decline is a testament to the effectiveness of our law enforcement strategies and our unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and order.
A Comparative Perspective: Tamil Nadu vs. National Average
Tamil Nadu’s crime rate is not only declining but also compares favorably with the national average. In 2022, the national crime rate was 422.2 per lakh population. In comparison, Tamil Nadu’s crime rate, particularly concerning crimes against women, is significantly lower. The national average for crimes against women stands at 64.5 offenses per lakh population, while Tamil Nadu boasts a much lower average of 22.4.
These figures reinforce Tamil Nadu’s position as one of the safest states in India, with a crime rate well below the national average. Our proactive measures in crime prevention and law enforcement are clearly yielding tangible results.
Addressing Specific Concerns: Political Murders and Rowdyism
There have been concerns about political murders, such as the tragic case of BSP State president Armstrong. I want to assure the public that our police force is conducting a thorough and unbiased investigation into this case. We are committed to ensuring that justice is served.
It is also crucial to differentiate between types of murders. The category of murders motivated by rowdyism or previous enmity has seen a consistent decline over the past three years—from 49 cases in 2021 to just 18 cases reported so far in 2024. This reduction is the direct result of targeted police actions, including re-categorization of rowdy elements, intensified surveillance, and proactive financial investigations against notorious individuals.
Maintaining and Enhancing Safety
The Tamil Nadu Police has adopted a comprehensive strategy to maintain law and order. This includes regular updates and re-categorization of rowdy elements, focused monitoring by specialized units, and preventive detentions under the Goondas Act. These measures have effectively curtailed the activities of rowdy elements, as evidenced by the significant decrease in murders associated with rowdyism.
Our efforts extend beyond mere statistics. The perception of safety among the public is paramount. Our ongoing initiatives are designed to enhance the overall sense of security across the state. The establishment of the ‘Drive Against Rowdy Elements’ (DARE) and the appointment of officers dedicated to monitoring these individuals have further strengthened our efforts to ensure that Tamil Nadu remains peaceful and conducive to growth.
A State on the Path to Continued Peace
Tamil Nadu continues to maintain its status as one of the safest states in India, with a crime rate well below the national average. The allegations of rising crime are not supported by the data. On the contrary, our state is experiencing a period of declining crime rates, with law and order well under control.
As we look to the future, the Tamil Nadu Police remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. We will continue to implement and refine strategies that protect the public and preserve the peace that defines our state.
