9-Month ISS Mission, Challenges, Boeing Starliner Failure & SpaceX Rescue

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore have safely returned to Earth after an unplanned nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Their journey, initially intended as an eight-day test flight, was extended due to technical issues with their Boeing Starliner spacecraft.​

Mission Purpose and Duration

Launched on June 5, 2024, the primary objective of Williams and Wilmore’s mission was to conduct the Boeing Crew Flight Test (Boe-CFT), the first crewed mission of the Boeing Starliner capsule. This mission aimed to validate the spacecraft’s performance, ensuring its readiness for future operational flights. The plan was to spend eight days in space, during which they would dock with the ISS, conduct system tests, and return to Earth, thereby certifying Starliner’s capabilities for regular crewed missions.

Technical Issues and Extended Stay

Shortly after launch, Starliner encountered propulsion system anomalies, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions, which compromised its ability to safely return the crew to Earth. Despite extensive troubleshooting, NASA and Boeing could not fully resolve these issues. Consequently, the decision was made to keep Williams and Wilmore aboard the ISS, extending their mission indefinitely until a safe return method could be arranged. ​

Throughout their prolonged stay, Williams and Wilmore actively participated in over 150 scientific experiments, covering areas such as biology, human physiology, physics, and materials science. Return to Earth and ISRO’s Involvement

On March 18, 2025, Williams and Wilmore, along with SpaceX Crew-9 members Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov, returned to Earth aboard SpaceX’s Dragon Freedom spacecraft, which splashed down off the coast of Florida. While the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) did not have a direct role in the astronauts’ return, ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan welcomed Williams back, highlighting her remarkable achievement and expressing interest in leveraging her expertise for India’s space endeavors.

Public Interest and Historical Context

The extended mission drew significant public attention, reminiscent of past instances where astronauts faced prolonged space stays due to technical challenges. For example, in 2023, astronaut Frank Rubio spent 371 days in space after a micrometeorite strike on his Soyuz capsule necessitated an extended stay. ​
